What personal data does this site collect?

Newsletter:

If you subscribe to Casey Hagen’s newsletter, only your email address is collected. Email addresses are not shared or sold. The newsletter includes new releases, giveaways, sales, recipes, contests, and random inappropriateness. I promise, no late night drunken posts.

Comments/Guestbook:

If you leave a comment on this website, the data shown in the comments form is saved, along with your IP address and browser user agent. Comment submission data is submitted to the Akismet service and Anti-Spam by CleanTalk for the sole purpose of spam checking.

An anonymized string created from your email address is provided to the Gravatar service to determine if your email address is associated with a Gravatar. After approval of your comment, your Gravatar (if you have one) is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

None of the data collected for these purposes are shared or sold.

Contact forms:

Your name, email address, and message, along with your IP address and browser user agent, are captured when you submit a message using this website’s contact form. This information is not shared, sold, or used for marketing purposes. Contact form submission data is submitted to the Akismet service and Anti-Spam by CleanTalk for the sole purpose of spam checking.

Media:

If you upload images in a comment, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included, because visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website. This advice protects you.

Cookies:

When you leave a comment on this site, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year. Cookies can be deleted from your browser at any time.

Embedded content from other websites:

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if you had visited the other website. These other websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics:

This website employs the Jetpack plugin to track visitor usage. A visitor’s IP address, WordPress.com user ID (if logged in), WordPress.com username (if logged in), browser user agent, visiting URL, referring URL, timestamp of event, browser language, and country code are collected. Important: The site owner does not have access to any of this information. For example, a site owner can see that a specific post has 285 views, but cannot see which specific users/accounts viewed that post. Stats logs are retained by Automattic for 28 days and are used for the sole purpose of powering this feature.

I also have Google Analytics plugged into my site. It’s the Universal Analytics version and has not been modified. As a matter of fact, I don’t even know how to use it so while it is there, it’s not activated. That would require adding code…and let’s be honest, I’m a writer. I know how to work about five percent of my website. Even if it did actively track information, hell if I could figure out how to access that information.

Activity Tracked:

Post and page views, outbound link clicks, referring URLs and search engine terms, and country.

How long is your data retained?

If you leave a comment on this website, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so the site can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. For the newsletter, your email address is retained indefinitely unless you unsubscribe.

What rights do you have over your data?

You can request to receive an exported file of your comments and metadata. You can also request that any personal data retained about you be erased. This does not include any data this website is obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
